What is “Meg Ryan Fall” And How Does It Translate to Interiors?

What Nancy Meyers movies are to summer, Meg Ryan movies are to autumn. The former offers oodles of beachy inspiration- think wicker baskets at the farmers market and oversized white linen shirts while you stroll along the beach. The latter, as TikTok has been documenting of late, conjures up feelings of cozy, moody city living, walking through the city streets wearing a cable knit jumper, sipping a takeaway coffee and carrying home a bunch of newspaper-wrapped flowers you bought yourself because you are the Self Care Queen.

Gen Z, the TikTok generation, have been celebrating the beginning of “Meg Ryan Fall” for weeks now, and I must admit, I’ve spent hours of my life watching content creators romanticise the nineties as though it wasn’t something I’d actually lived through. I was only born in 1990, so, to be fair, my nineties were spent drinking MiWadi, not merlot, and resisting bedtime instead of embracing a leisurely nighttime routine, cosied up in bed.

So to make up for those missed opportunities, I’ve taken a deep dive into Meg Ryan Fall and all that it means. And because I’m an interiors fanatic, I wanted to see how it translates to homemaking. Here are some tips for incorporating the Meg Ryan Fall aesthetic into your space.

Bedroom

Whether it’s a space for you to sob about lost love or a haven for you to retreat to with a good book, your bed should feel like a warm hug. The key to achieving this feeling is by layering on nostalgic bedding like patchwork quilts and ruffle-trimmed sheets.

Bathroom

Though we don’t actually see any examples of bathroom design in the Meg Ryan Fall filmography, I can imagine that it’s a key room for this lifestyle. Use an antique mirror to tousle your curls and apply a terracotta-hued lipstick, store your cotton pads in vintage ceramic canisters and add some ambiance to your bathing by installing wall lights in your bathroom so that you can kill the overheads.

Home office

In the WFH era, our desks at home are more likely to be used for Excel Spreadsheets rather than penning love letters (or emails, as was the case for Kathleen Kelly), but that doesn’t mean they can’t still be cute. Stack classic romance novels in a simple bookcase, get yourself a vintage desk and instead of using a stark desk lamp, opt for a traditional ceramic table lamp instead.

Living Room

Meg Ryan’s living rooms are often the epitome of cosy romance- the kind her characters are often yearning for. Think cushy floral upholstery, antique rattan furniture and hints of autumnal tones like rust and ochre.

Kitchen

“I’ll have what she’s having!” Eat your food like Sally Albright in a kitchen decorated with soft neutrals, collected artwork and shabby chic style furniture. Display plates on the wall and embrace traditional dining chair styles.

Hallway

Enter into your own Meg Ryan Fall universe by adorning your entryway with some simple yet homely decor. Hang some botanical prints on your walls and keep a retro wire basket on hand for when You’ve Got Mail.
